Our List of the Best Refrigerators in India
Though quite a difficult task, we managed to narrow our favorite refrigerators down to … These have been selected on the basis of online reviews and factors like build, door type, capacity, energy efficiency, extra features, and price.
Single Door Refrigerators –
One of the highest rated single door refrigerators, this model by LG boasts of a smart inverter compressor which ensures higher durability, less energy consumption, and low noise levels. It has a capacity of 190 liters which is ideal for a family of up to 3 members. The fridge also has a BEE 4-star rating, which means that it is highly efficient and will generate lower electricity bills.
Some of the features of this product are “Moist ‘n’ Fresh”, Smart Connect, Anti-bacterial gasket, and a stabilizer-free operation. To tell you a little about each of these features, “Moist ‘n’ Fresh” is a technology that keeps your food fresh in the lattice-like box by retaining only the required moisture after condensation. Anti-Bacterial gasket wards off bacteria while maintaining proper hygiene levels. Stabilizer-free operation means that this refrigerator can run even without a stabilizer, within a voltage range of 90~310V^. And our favorite feature of the lot, “Smart Connect” allows you to hook up the fridge to your inverter in case of a power outage.
What’s more? This refrigerator features “Toughened Glass Shelves”. Why this is awesome is that these shelves can take on heavy food items as well as vessels. As per the company, the shelves can hold as much as 175 KG of weight.
You also get a warranty of 1 year on the fridge, and 10 years on its compressor.
Despite all its features and a reasonable pricing, the LG 190 L does have a couple of flaws. i) It does not have supporting legs at the back, which can be an issue while moving it. ii) It lacks an internal light in the freezer section, so seeing things at night maybe slightly inconvenient. That said, these low points are not a deal breaker as you still get a high quality product.
This elegant looking single door refrigerator by Samsung, has a capacity of 212 liters and therefore, is perfect for a small sized family of 2-3 members. It boasts of a BEE 3-star rating and an inverter compressor, both contributing to lower energy consumption and more durability. The digital inverter also ensures minimal noise levels.
Similar to the LG model mentioned above, this refrigerator also operates without an external stabilizer (between 100V to 300V) and if the voltage is too much to handle, it’ll shut off on its own. It also features ‘toughened glass shelves’, which are capable of holding up to 150 KG of weight. Speaking of shelves, you get a separate freeze zone, a veggie box, a fresh room (for items like desserts and milk), and a big bottle guard for storing larger drinks. There is also an anti-bacterial gasket that bars the entry and growth of fungi and bacteria.
As far as warranty is concerned, you get the standard 1 year on the product and 10 years on the compressor.
Much like the LG fridge mentioned above, this refrigerator also does not have a light in the freezer box. Also, you will need to manually defrost the fridge on a frequent basis.

The moist balance crisper feature sports a lattice-design box that ensures the required amount of moisture inside your refrigerator.
As far as warranty goes, you get 1 year on the refrigerator and 9 years on the inverter compressor.
The only disappointing aspect of this model is that it has no light in the freezer box. Also, the egg tray can only hold up to 6 eggs.

Intellisensors can basically sense factors such as load, weather, and usage pattern in order to provide sufficient cooling. It also has a feature called active-deo which ensures an odor-free fridge. Its ‘Deepfreeze tech’ makes sure that there are no crystals formed atop ice-creams.
Instead of a 9-year warranty on the compressor, you get an extra 1 year with this model. Rest of the basic features remain the same.

Our Buyer’s Guide:
First things first, let’s understand how a refrigerator works. Basically, refrigerators suck in the heat from all the food items while keeping them cool. But how? It does so, by using the processes of compression, condensation, and evaporation.
Refrigerators will normally have two sections – the refrigerator section and the freezer section. In the former, it maintains a temperature between 3-5 degrees above 0∞C and in the latter, the temperature would be below 0∞C.
Before you finalize on a refrigerator, it is important to keep a few aspects in mind to make sure that you make a suitable purchase. Have a look:
1. Type of Refrigerator:
There are mainly four types of refrigerators which are categorized as per the number of doors – Single Door, Double Door, Multi Doors, and Side by Side.
As the name suggests, single door refrigerators have only one door, are smaller compared to other refrigerators, and have both, the freezer box and the vegetable box inside a single unit. They’re the cheapest, and are sufficient for 1-2 persons. The problem with this type of refrigerator is that the freezer box is prone to gathering frost. This requires users to defrost the refrigerator regularly.
Double door refrigerators have two doors; one for the refrigerator compartment and the other for the freezer box. This type of a refrigerator is ideal for families of 3-5 members. The best part is that it is frost-free, and has a larger freezer compartment. Note that double door refrigerators can be of two types – Top Mount and Bottom Mount. In top mount refrigerators, the freezer box is positioned at the top whereas in bottom mount refrigerators, the freezer box is located at the bottom of the entire unit. In case you would be using the refrigerator compartment more often, you must consider the bottom mount refrigerator. Also, if you suffer from back pain, this could be a better choice as you wouldn’t need to bend so often. That said, this type of a refrigerator uses up more energy.
Triple/Multi door refrigerators are great for those who like to have separate spaces for freezer items, refrigerator items, and vegetables. Unfortunately, this type of refrigerator consumes a lot more energy compared to other refrigerators. Note that triple door refrigerators are suitable for 3-4 persons.
Side by Side refrigerators are big in size with two or more doors. They can cater to a large family of 5-6 members and have lot of compartments and space for various food items. Some of them even come with an ice & water dispenser for easier access.
2. Capacity, & Family Size:
Refrigerators come in various capacities ranging from 150 liters to 900 liters. The capacity that is best suited for you will depend upon your family size.
|Family Size||Refrigerator Size|
|Individuals or Couples||150-250 Litres|
|Small families with one child||250-350 Litres|
|Medium-sized families with 4-5 members||300-500 Litres|
|Large families with up to 6 members||Over 500 Litres|
3. Energy Efficiency/BEE Star Rating:
Much like air conditioners, the BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) also rates refrigerators on their efficiency depending upon the amount of electricity consumed in a year (kWh/year). These ratings can vary between 1 and 5, 5 being the most efficient.
Though an expensive initial investment, it is recommended that you go for a higher star rating so that you don’t end up paying high electricity bills in the long run. That said, some of the refrigerators with a lower star rating still perform well so do not weed them out just on the basis of this factor.
Keep in mind that triple-door refrigerators do not come with any star rating.
4. Inverter Compressor:
Again, similar to ACs, refrigerators also come with an inverter technology. In conventional refrigerators, the compressors oscillate between on and off frequently, at a single speed, thereby using up more energy.
Inverter refrigerators on the other hand, operate at various speeds, offering the required cooling capacity as per the temperature. This ensures an optimum use of electricity.
5. Conversion Feature:
Nowadays, some of the refrigerators come with a conversion facility, which turns the freezer into a refrigerator and vice-versa, as per your need. This means that you have more storage space than otherwise.
The type of refrigerant that your fridge uses is an important factor to consider. Why you ask? Well, it’s for the environment. You’d be happy to know that there are eco-friendly refrigerants like R134a and R600a. Beware of refrigerators which use CFC as it is not environmental-friendly.
7. Type of Defrosting:
In single-door refrigerators, you will find that the cooling process is done via natural convection. These type of refrigerators are known are “Direct Cool Refrigerator”. Though they use less electricity and are much cheaper to buy, it will require to be defrosted frequently.
Double-door, multi-door, and side-by side refrigerators use a frost-free technology. These refrigerators get rid of the frost on their own (in regular intervals) by means of electric fans which set off cool air within the refrigerator.
8. Additional Features:
Refrigerators come with a myriad features including built-in stabilizers (great for areas prone to voltage fluctuations), deodorizer (for eliminating odors using filters), moisture control (to keep veggies and fruits fresh), cool pad (for keeping items cool in the event of an outage), separators (for better organization), adjustable shelves (to make space for big items), tempered glass shelves (sturdier), and quick-freeze compartments (easy access to ice).
9. Kitchen Space:
This aspect may seem pretty obvious but it is a pretty important one to keep in mind. While you may get all excited seeing all the cutting-edge refrigerators, you must buy one that fits well in your kitchen. You don’t want to get one that’s too small or too big for the space you have, only to be disappointed.
10. Eating Habits:
Refrigerators usually come with a definite fridge to freezer ratio that is mostly either 80:20 or 70:30. The former ratio is ideal for vegetarians because it has greater refrigerator space than freezer space whereas the latter has a fairly big freezer space, perfect for meat eaters.
This article is pretty comprehensive one, covering all the various aspects of a refrigerator while also talking about the best products available in the Indian market today. We hope that you are able to make a suitable choice with the help of the same.
